Frozen Painkiller
The British Virgin Islands favorite, frozen: dark rum, pineapple, orange and cream of coconut topped with fresh nutmeg.
- 5 min prep
- 2 drinks
- Tiki mug or highball
The Painkiller is the piña colada's richer cousin from the Caribbean, with dark rum, orange juice and a dusting of nutmeg that makes it taste warm and spiced even while it's ice-cold.
Frozen, it's like a tropical creamsicle for grown-ups. Fresh-grated nutmeg on top is not optional; it's the signature.
Frozen Painkiller
Ingredients (2 drinks)
- 4 oz dark or navy-strength rum
- 4 oz pineapple juice

- 2 oz cream of coconut
- 3 cups ice cubes
- freshly grated nutmeg, to finish
Instructions
- Add rum, pineapple juice, orange juice and cream of coconut to the blender.
- Add the ice and blend on high for 40 seconds.
- Pour into tall glasses or tiki mugs.
- Grate fresh nutmeg generously over the top and garnish with an orange slice.
Garnish: Fresh nutmeg, orange slice and pineapple leaf
Glass: Tiki mug or highball
Tips for the best texture
- Navy-strength rum is traditional, but any flavorful dark rum works.
- Whole nutmeg and a fine grater make a big difference over pre-ground.
Try a twist
Swap half the rum for spiced rum for an even cozier, holiday-friendly version.
Blender, frozen drink maker or slush machine?
These amounts are written for a standard countertop blender. In an ice-shaving frozen drink maker, put the ice in the hopper and the liquids and any fruit in the jar, then run a full cycle. In a home slush machine, which freezes the drink itself, leave out the ice, replace it with about 1 cup of cold water or juice, and pour the mixed liquid into the bowl.
